Research interest:

Dr. Frech has a research and clinical interest in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). Her primary interest is early diagnosis and health care delivery to this patient population. She is most interested in the vasculopathy aspect of SSc, since vasculopathy precedes fibrosis and early intervention may improve outcomes. She has a strong translational science interest in defining the mechanism of vascular leak and inflammation. As the director of Rheumatology clinical trials at the University of Utah, director of the University of Utah Scleroderma Clinic, and the principal investigator of the Prospective Registry for Early Systemic Sclerosis (PRESS) in the United States, she has helped develop standardized data collection methods (physical exam and laboratory) for patients with this rare disease. She has implemented Rheumatology telemedicine at the Salt Lake Veterans Affair Medical Center to facilitate early diagnosis and care for rural and/or underserved areas for SSc and all rheumatic disease. Since its implementation, Dr. Frech has demonstrated that telemedicine has significantly improved rheumatology access to care for US Veterans. Her long term goal is to create a SSc Vasculopathy Center of Excellence through a collaboration of top vascular scientists in the Donato and Li laboratories.
